The root chakra: The base of our trust and security

Exploring the Root Chakra

At the very base of the spine shimmers the four-petaled red flower, the first of the seven main chakras: Muladhara, or the root chakra. The petals represent the four qualities of truth, sincerity, integrity and morality, with trust in the centre holding the flower together and promoting our spiritual development.

Our innate need for security

Psychologically, the root chakra represents our survival instinct and need for security. When this chakra is balanced, we feel grounded and secure. Developing the four qualities is vital for living in truth and being in harmony with ourselves and others. Trust is the foundation for spiritual belonging, development and guidance by a higher power.

How do we handle ourselves when life changes? When we encounter paths we didn’t know existed or qualities in people that scare us, what do we do and who do we become? When faced with changes or new aspects of ourselves and others, it’s important to stay grounded through practices like yoga and meditation.

Practices to strengthen our trust

Pranayama is a vital part of yoga, as breathing directly affects us and can calm a restless mind. These methods help us restore balance and meet challenges with calm and stability. Trust in a higher power is very important, and by strengthening our spiritual presence and trust in a higher power, we can navigate life’s changes with deeper security and harmony.

Personally, I need routines like good sleep, a healthy diet and positive environments to feel good about myself and life. When life storms, my inner self is affected, and I feel ungrounded and anxious. It affects my life choices and my relationships. Yoga and shamanic healing practices give me what I need to rest in the trust that everything is as it should be, and I then feel calmer and more secure.

Pranayama has taken a special place in my life, and through various techniques, I can calm my mind. My spiritual side is constantly seeking deeper presence and a higher connection. This leads to an acceptance of life as it is and that everything is as it should be.

Imbalances in the root chakra

Imbalances in the root chakra can lead to feelings of instability and fear. Fear can develop in personalities with low self-esteem who constantly need validation through external stimuli. Addiction and deep personality disorders are said to have their roots in an unbalanced root chakra. An underactive root chakra makes it difficult to feel grounded, while an overactive one can create an excessive fixation on security and materialism.

The root chakra is connected to our physical existence and our connection to the earth. When it’s balanced, we feel at home in our body and accept our place in the world. We live in the present with security and trust.

Nourishing our inner soil

How and with what do we water our inner flower? One good way is by practising regular meditation, yoga and other spiritual exercises that promote presence and connection with ourselves. Spending time in nature, such as walking barefoot on the earth, helps us ground and balance our root chakra. Through these practices, we strengthen our connection with ourselves and the earth, leading to a deeper spiritual experience.

What nourishment do we give ourselves? To nourish our inner soil, it’s important to follow healthy routines that include a balanced diet, sufficient sleep and surrounding ourselves with supportive people. These habits strengthen our qualities of truth, sincerity, integrity and morality.

Imbalances in the root chakra can manifest in escapist behaviours, insecurity, relationship problems and financial difficulties. People with an overactive root chakra may fear change and be stuck in old patterns. Working with the root chakra can release blockages and increase trust in life’s flow.

Strengthening the root chakra

To strengthen the root chakra, we can explore our roots – both literally and metaphorically – and reconnect with traditions, family and cultural heritage. By integrating both the psychological and spiritual perspectives of the root chakra, we achieve a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the world, leading to increased harmony and wellbeing.

The root chakra affects our entire energy system. When it’s balanced, energy flows freely through the other chakras, creating harmony in both our physical and mental health as well as spiritual development. An unbalanced root chakra, on the other hand, can create blockages in the other chakras and affect our self-confidence and ability to feel love and empathy. Narcissistic and psychopathic behaviours often have their explanation in an unbalanced root chakra.

Let truth be your guide

Working with the root chakra is therefore crucial for creating a strong and balanced foundation for our energy system, leading to increased harmony, health and wellbeing on all levels. A balanced and loving person usually has a balanced root chakra. Continue to water and nurture your inner flower and let truth be your guide in life.

In the temple of your own body, within the heart is a lotus flower. Within the lotus is an illuminated jewel space. Find who dwells in this precious space within your heart. Know that person, love that being. That is you. - Chandogya Upanishad
